Stephanie Ansky

BARRISTER AND SOLICITOR/PRINCIPAL LAWYER

I have been practicing law for 30 years; 25 of those years strictly in family law. Family law found me. I tried to run- but it won me over.

25 years and I still love what I do. But- Don’t hire me if you are looking to take your spouse “to the cleaners” or vindictively keep the children from their other parent.

I am an excellent lawyer but first and foremost I am a human being. I am a divorced 57 year old mother of 2 adult children with an ex- husband that I consider my friend.

I want to walk my children down the aisle with my ex-husband. We celebrate milestones together as a family with new partners. While not every matrimonial matter can take that route- it’s almost always worth a try.

As a last resort we litigate. As I grew as a lawyer, I valued a good, negotiated settlement over a win in court- when I won the other side lost. Don’t get me wrong, the thrill of a win is great and my clients were always pleased, but at what cost to the family both emotionally and financially. Court is expensive and emotionally draining for a family. It remains an option – but not the preferred option.

I wear 2 hats – my reasonable open minded negotiator collaborative lawyer hat and then the litigator hat. When needed to be positional and tough, you would be surprised what I can accomplish.

Less and less are people choosing that route. I practice what I preach. Kids first; whether they are 5 years old or 25 years old, no children want warring parents. I share my stories with my clients, they know that I “get it”, not just the law – but them. I care, I act and I bring results.

I promise to make you laugh through the tears and calm you when needed. I will reassure you and be upfront when you are being unreasonable. I won’t tell you what you want to hear but what you need to hear. I know what I am doing.

In my spare time I hang with my kids (remarkably they still enjoy my company) play tennis (not well), watch baseball (Go Jays Go!), spend time with my mother (she loves to shop) and walk my 3 year old rescue mini golden doodle -Jerry Garcia (he was named by a grateful dead fan). Oh and there is life after divorce- I promise.

Iris Cheng

LAW CLERK

After 8 years together, I am not just Stephanie’s law clerk, I am also her friend, her alarm clock, her computer helper and her organizer.

I joined Ansky Family Law with many years of experience having worked at boutique family and litigation law firms. While Stephanie loves to yell out my name when she has a question, it has become harder to do since I work half the time from home! Stephanie and I make a great team.

When I’m not working, I am playing with Oscar (my husky dog) and Momo (my rabbit) or doing tai-chi. I travel with my husband and visit with my daughter (ok- the dog and rabbit are hers, but they love me more!).

David Kula

ASSISTANT

I joined Ansky Family Law last year as an assistant to Stephanie and to Iris. I have developed a strong interest in family law and have reviewed countless separation agreements, financial statements and court orders. I have a keen interest in legal research. As a result of my experience at Ansky Family Law,  I will be pursuing a degree in the legal field.

When I am not working, you can find me watching a good comedy or a serious drama with my family. Feel free to talk Blue Jays with me!
